Air pollution affects the health of all those living in Delhi, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory and cardiac conditions.
Delhi has become one of the most polluted cities in the world in last few years.
People complain of problems such as pain in chest while inhaling and irritation in eyes since the air quality index is severely high with the particulate matter at 2.5 in many areas of the capital.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
1. It can lead to the onset of allergies or aggravate existing allergies and decrease lung immunity.
2. It might be the major factor in causing premature birth.
3. It can decrease lung function among several groups. Leaving them vulnerable to disease like COPD, asthma, respiratory problems.
4. It might aggravate per existing lung and cardiac function along with uncontrollable or chronic coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
CAUSES
1. Burning of crackers in large quantity in spite of the ban on their sale.
2. Ongoing stubble burning in adjacent areas of Delhi.
3. Lowering temperature in the city causing fog and smog mix.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
1. People should avoid getting out for outdoor physical activities like jogging.
2. N-95 mask should be used if it is necessary to go out.
3. Air purifying plants like aloe vera, IVY and spider plant to be planted at home and workplaces.
4. To ensure the indoor air pollution does not take place, get air purifier installed if possible. Chimney in kitchen and exhaust fan in the washroom is also helpful.
